The 4.8m wide, 110kg sculpture is a private commission, reflecting the restaurant’s contemporary approach to Japanese cuisine.

Camilleri’s innovative work, named Gōrudo (meaning gold in Japanese), intertwines Japanese culture, Zen Buddhism, and a return to nature. Influenced by bamboo and the bonsai tree tradition symbolizing harmony, the sculpture embraces the minimalist design of ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement.

Camilleri revisits his past artistic endeavors, incorporating gilding reminiscent of his earlier works, such as the exhibited Untitled in Musee Botanique and the 1999 Stones installations in gold leaf off the Maltese coast. AKI’s Gōrudo sculpture adds sophistication to the restaurant’s ambiance, standing as a contemporary masterpiece deserving recognition in the local art scene.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” text_align=”left”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_gallery type=”flickity_style” images=”5063,5084,5085,5086,5087,5088,5089″ flickity_controls=”pagination” flickity_desktop_columns=”1″ flickity_small_desktop_columns=”1″ flickity_tablet_columns=”1″ flickity_box_shadow=”none” onclick=”link_no” img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_background” full_screen_row_position=”middle” bg_image=”2673″ bg_position=”center center” bg_repeat=”no-repeat” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” top_padding=”5%” bottom_padding=”1%” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” bottom_padding=”40″ text_align=”left”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_custom_heading text=”David Speed” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:left|color:%23b48e69″ use_theme_fonts=”yes” link=”|||”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” text_align=”left”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” width=”1/4″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_custom_heading text=”ARTIST” font_container=”tag:h5|font_size:14|text_align:left|color:%23b2b2b2″ google_fonts=”font_family:Hind%3A300%2Cregular%2C500%2C600%2C700|font_style:500%20bold%20regular%3A500%3Anormal”][fancy-ul icon_type=”none” alignment=”left”]

Born in 1962 in the province of Sichuan, Zhuang Hong-yi is regarded as one of China’s most influential artists. It is the combination of his Chinese background and his European influences that mark the uniqueness of Zhuang’s work. Embracing his present without losing his past, Zhuang defines a sense of self that exists between the two and enacts this personal story visually, balancing between phases of controlled planning, emotional gesture, and careful editing that result in works of beauty, surprise, and curiosity. Zhuang’s work is distinguished by its bold color schemes and sophisticated, recurring, and precise floral motifs that symbolize a universal symbol of prosperity and optimism. Zhuang’s consistent return to this theme throughout his work showcases his ongoing refinement and experimentation, oscillating between raw emotion and carefully orchestrated artistry.

Zhuang Hong-Yi’ work named Change Of Horizons involves thousands of hand-folded colored pieces of rice paper, as they hypnotize you as you wander past them. You feel as if you are bobbing on a sea of brilliance as you pace back and forth, striving to catch a glimpse of precisely where one color blends in with another within its rhythmic, captivating, protean elegance.

The flowerbed pieces are made of carefully folded rice paper that creates a layered structure reflecting light from multiple layers, delivering constructive and destructive interference for different colors. The interferences make the colors vary at different angles, creating a playful, chromatic and very invigorating experience.

Austin Camilleri new Golden Sculpture at AKI

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Japanese culture was the main source of inspiration for a recently installed sculpture in one of Valletta’s foremost restaurants AKI, by internationally-renowned artist, Austin Camilleri. This private commission that is visible to the general public from Strait Street as well as from St Lucy Street in Valletta, is 4.8m wide and weighs approximately 110kg.[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”5045″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”padding-4-percent” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]Camilleri was commissioned to produce an art work that would complement the restaurant and lounge bar’s concept that thrives on a contemporary take on Japanese dishes accompanied by signature cocktails.

The sculpture is innovative and unique in the nature of the commission in the local art scene, yet it is also entrenched in Camilleri’s past art.

The man-made sculpture was inspired by and embraces Japanese culture and Zen Buddhism, as well as a return to nature – particularly bamboo that is found all over Japan, and the bonsai tree tradition which symbolises harmony – roots, and ikebana the Japanese art of arranging flowers that is governed by minimalist design. The word Aki in Japanese refers to harvesting and autumn, but also means shining and bright, yet AKI in this restaurant’s case is a derivation from the Japanese word ‘Akitsu’ that means dragonfly.[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”5063″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][vc_column_text]Austin Camilleri embraced such thoughts and ideas to create the tree branch that revisits some of his past works where he would apply gilding to most art works. Camilleri is here revisiting his Untitled, exhibited in Musee Botanique in Brussels and the 1999 Stones installations of gilded natural stones in 22 crt gold leaf that projected from the sea off the Maltese and Gozitan coast and outside the pre-Renzo Piano City Gate in Valletta. The AKI sculpture is therefore called Gōrudo, which means gold in Japanese.

The sculpture adds to the sophistication of the ambience and is certainly a contemporary art work that deserves recognition[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” equal_height=”yes” content_placement=”top” bg_image=”2673″ bg_position=”center center” bg_repeat=”no-repeat” bg_color=”#151112″ scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” top_padding=”8%” bottom_padding=”8%” disable_element=”yes” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” parallax_bg=”true” parallax_bg_speed=”slow” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-4-percent” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”zoom-out”][image_with_animation image_url=”5055″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][vc_column_text]Speed is a multi-disciplinary artist who is currently focused on neon painting, an illuminated dance of light and shadows which results in dramatic-yet-happy works.
